Iran’s presidential candidates critical discourse

Iran holds its presidential election on June 18, and turnout is expected to be low as the country deals with the COVID-19 pandemic and an unstable economy.

Iran’s presidential candidates have clashed during the final televised debate – they spoke at length and directly about the corrupt and indigent management of the country Iran, they were vehement about the Iran nuclear agreement with world powers and the United States sanctions.

The prominent former presidential candidate and opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who led to 2009 Green Movement protests to prevent the re-election of  President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad  also criticized the 2021 elections, he says he stands with those who can no longer stand.

Ebrahim Raisi, who leads the judiciary, says he will remain committed to the JCPOA like any other state agreement. However, he said the efficacious enactment of the accord requires a “strong” government, adding that the outgoing administration of moderate President Hassan Rouhani was not as such.
