President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in the East Room of the White House on Thursday. Juneteenth also known as liberation day, celebrates the end of slavery on June 19, 1865, when Union Gen. Gordon Granger freed all the enslaved African Americans after the civil war had ended.
President Biden during the signing ceremony said”I regret that my grandchildren aren’t here because this is a really, really, really important moment in our history.” he also added that Juneteenth marks both a long, hard night of slavery and subjugation and the promise of a brighter morning to come.
It has been said that the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer last summer sparked a nationwide protest on the country’s racism history, this is said to have to the making of Juneteenth a national holiday.
